Mr. Brainwash

Thierry Guetta · French, born 1966 · Based in Los Angeles

Biography

Mr. Brainwash is the name adopted by Thierry Guetta, a French-born artist based in Los Angeles. After documenting the street-art scene and artists including Invader, Shepard Fairey and Banksy, he became the central figure in Banksy’s 2010 film Exit Through the Gift Shop. His practice combines screenprint, stencil, spray paint, collage and painting, reworking images from popular culture and art history through an optimistic visual language.

Exhibitions and presence

His public profile began with Life Is Beautiful in Los Angeles in 2008 and expanded through projects in New York, London and Miami. Artsy records an active programme of solo and group exhibitions and fair presentations, including Galerie Montmartre, Vision XR Gallery, In Arte Veritas, Frank Fluegel Gallery, Clarendon Fine Art and Taglialatella Galleries.

Publications and culture

Exit Through the Gift Shop introduced his trajectory to an international audience and received an Academy Award nomination for Documentary Feature. Mr. Brainwash also created the artwork for Madonna’s Celebration album; Artsy has featured his work in editorial coverage devoted to street art and market demand.

Market and collecting

Artsy identifies an active secondary market and records results reaching six figures for major works. The artist’s recognisable iconography, international gallery presence and mix of unique works and editions support broad collector visibility. Values nevertheless vary materially according to uniqueness, technique, size, year, condition, provenance and certificate: each work must therefore be assessed individually and should not be presented as a guaranteed investment.
