Born in Sapri in 1964, Angelo Accardi is an Italian artist whose work studies people and the spaces they inhabit. He constructs recognisable interiors and urban settings, then disrupts them with animals, pop-cultural figures, quotations from art history, drips and painterly erasures. The result is a surreal, ironic tension between realism and visual displacement.
Accardi’s official chronology documents an international exhibition path from the 1990s onwards, with presentations in Rome, Milan, Munich, Madrid, Salzburg, London, New York, Miami, Dubai and other centres. It includes the 2011 Padiglione Italia at the 54th Venice Biennale and recurring exhibitions devoted to the Misplaced and Blend cycles.
His practice moves through the Underpressure, Misplaced and Blend bodies of work. Ostriches, pandas and other unexpected presences replace the conventional visitor and unsettle spaces associated with museums, galleries and daily life.
